‘Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) says: While I was standing in the row on the day of Badr, I looked to my right and to my left and saw two young boys from the Ansar. So I wished that I were between (the strong horsemen) among them. Anyway, one of them pressed me and said, “O uncle! Do you recognize Abu Jahl?” I said, “Yes. But what do you want with him?” He said, “I have heard that he abuses the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). By Him in Whose hand is my soul, if I see him, then my body will not part from his body until the one of us whose death is decreed dies.” I was amazed at this. Then the other pressed me and spoke in a similar manner. Then, after a short while, I saw Abu Jahl running among the people. I said, “Listen! This is the person you were asking me about.” So both of them advanced towards him with their swords and struck him until they killed him. After that, they returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and informed him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, “Which of you killed him?” Each of them said, “I killed him.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Have you cleaned your swords?” They said, “No.” So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked at their swords and said, “Indeed, you both killed him, but the spoils will go to Mu’adh bin ‘Amr bin Jamuh.” And those two boys were Mu’adh bin ‘Afra and Mu’adh bin ‘Amr bin Jamuh.
