Hadith 1326

Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "One of the Prophets among the earlier Prophets fought in a battle. He said to his people: 'No one should go with me who has married a woman and wishes to consummate the marriage but has not yet done so, nor anyone who has built a house but has not yet put its roof on, nor anyone who has bought sheep or camels and is waiting for them to give birth.' So he fought in the battle. When they reached near a town at the time of Asr prayer or close to it, he said to the sun: 'You are subservient (to Allah) and I am also subservient (to Allah). O Allah! Hold it back for us.' So it was held back until Allah granted them victory. Then they gathered the spoils of war. A fire came down from the sky to consume the booty, but it did not consume it. So the Prophet said: 'Someone among you has stolen (from the booty), so let one man from each tribe pledge allegiance to me.' The hand of one man stuck to his hand, so the Prophet said: 'The thief is among you, so let all the people of your tribe pledge allegiance to me.' Then the hands of two or three men stuck to his hand. The Prophet said: 'You have committed the theft.' So they brought a head of gold shaped like a cow's head and placed it there. Then the fire came and consumed it. Then Allah saw our weakness and our inability, so He made the spoils of war lawful for us."
