Hadith 1299

Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that on the day of Uhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) appointed Abdullah bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) as the leader of the foot soldiers (and they were fifty men), and said: “If you see us in such a state that birds are eating our flesh (i.e., we are defeated and killed), even then do not leave your position until I call you back. And if you see that we have defeated the disbelievers and trampled them, even then do not move until I call you back.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) defeated the disbelievers. Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah, I saw the women running, lifting their clothes, exposing their anklets and shins. Then those with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O people! The spoils of war, the spoils of war! Your companions have prevailed, what are you waiting for now? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Have you forgotten the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? They said: By Allah, we will go to the people and collect the spoils of war. So when they went there and turned away, the disbelievers came running and the battle resumed. Thus, only twelve men remained with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The disbelievers martyred seventy of our men, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) had inflicted losses on one hundred and forty polytheists on the day of Badr: seventy prisoners and seventy killed. Abu Sufyan said three times: Is Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) alive among the people? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade answering. After that, Abu Sufyan said three times: Is the son of Abu Quhafah (Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him) alive among the people? Then he said: Is the son of Khattab (Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him) alive among the people? He said this three times. Then he turned to his companions and said: These people have been killed. So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) could not restrain himself and said: By Allah, O enemy of Allah! Those whom you have named are all alive, and your bad day is yet to come. Abu Sufyan said: Today is revenge for the day of Badr, and battle is like a bucket (sometimes up, sometimes down), and you will find mutilation among the people, but I neither ordered it nor did I dislike it. After that, Abu Sufyan began to chant: “O Hubal! Be exalted, O Hubal! Be exalted.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Why do you not answer him?” The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: O Messenger of Allah! What should we say? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Say: “Allah is the highest and most majestic.” Then Abu Sufyan said: We have Uzza, and you have no Uzza. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Why do you not answer him?” The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: O Messenger of Allah! What should we say? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Say: “Allah is our Protector, and you have no protector.”
