Hadith 1186

Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ‘Umrah in the month of Dhu al-Qa‘dah. The people of Makkah did not agree to let him enter Makkah until he (peace and blessings be upon him) made an agreement with them that he would stay in Makkah for three days. When they wrote the agreement, it was written: “This is the peace treaty upon which Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), has agreed.” The polytheists said, “We do not accept this, because if we knew you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have prevented you (from ‘Umrah); rather (we know that) you are Muhammad bin ‘Abdullah.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I am the Messenger of Allah and I am also Muhammad bin ‘Abdullah.” Then he said to Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), “Erase the words ‘Messenger of Allah.’” He replied, “No, by Allah! I will never erase your (name).” So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took the document himself and wrote (or had it written): “This is the peace treaty upon which Muhammad bin ‘Abdullah (peace and blessings be upon him) has agreed: He will enter Makkah with weapons sheathed, and whoever among the people of Makkah wishes to go with him, he will not take him, and if anyone among his companions wishes to stay in Makkah, he will not prevent him.”

Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Makkah and the appointed time passed, people came to Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, “Tell your companion (peace and blessings be upon him) to leave now, for the appointed time has passed.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left Makkah. Then the daughter of Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) ran after him, calling, “O uncle! O uncle!” Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) took her, held her hand, and brought her to Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (may Allah be pleased with her) and said, “Take your uncle’s daughter; I have brought her.” Then Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Ja‘far (may Allah be pleased with him) disputed among themselves. Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I have the most right to this girl; she is my uncle’s daughter.” Sayyiduna Ja‘far (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “She is my uncle’s daughter, and her maternal aunt is my wife.” Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “She is my brother’s daughter.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the girl to her maternal aunt and said, “The maternal aunt is like the mother.” And to Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he said, “You are from me and I am from you.” And to Sayyiduna Ja‘far (may Allah be pleased with him), he said, “You resemble me in appearance and character.” And to Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), he said, “You are my brother and my freed slave.”
