Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to her seeking help in her contract of manumission (the amount a slave or bondwoman has to pay to be freed), and (until then) she had not paid anything from her contract. So I said to her, “Go back to your owner; if they wish that I pay the amount of your contract on your behalf and your wala’ (right of inheritance) comes to me, then I will pay it.” So Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned this to her owner, but they refused and said, “If she desires reward, then let her do it in such a way that the wala’ will remain with us.” So Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: “Buy her and set her free, for the wala’ is for the one who sets free.” After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said: “What is wrong with people who stipulate conditions which are not in the Book of Allah? Beware! Whoever stipulates a condition which is not in the Book of Allah, it will not be valid for him, even if he stipulates it a hundred times. The condition of Allah is truer and firmer.”
