Hadith 1092

Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), that he (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever swears an oath in order to unlawfully take the right of a Muslim, and he is lying in that oath, will meet Allah while Allah is angry with him." Then Allah revealed this verse: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price..." until the end of the verse (Aal-e-Imran: 77). At that moment, Sayyiduna Ash'ath (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived and said, "Abu Abdur Rahman (i.e., Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him), what are you narrating to you? This verse was revealed concerning me. I had a well in the land of my cousin (he claimed the well as his property until the matter was brought before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: 'Present your witnesses (to prove that the well is yours).' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah! I have no witnesses.' So he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Then an oath will be taken from the other party.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah! He will immediately swear an oath.' On this occasion, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) narrated this hadith, and Allah the Exalted revealed this noble verse to confirm the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)."
