Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Among all the people of Madinah, we used to do the most farming. We used to lease out fields, and in return for the rent, a specific portion of the field would be assigned to the owner of the land (so that whatever was produced in it, he would take as rent for the land). Sometimes a calamity would befall that portion (so nothing would be produced in it), while the rest of the field would remain safe, and sometimes a calamity would befall the rest of the field and that portion would remain safe. So we were prohibited from this, and at that time, giving gold or silver (as rent) was not common.
