Hadith 1061

Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says that (one day) we were sitting with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when a funeral was brought. The people requested, “Please lead its funeral prayer.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, “Does he have any debt?” The people replied, “No.” So the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, “Did he leave any wealth?” The people replied, “No.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) led his funeral prayer.

After that, another funeral was brought. The people requested, “O Messenger of Allah! Please lead its funeral prayer as well.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, “Does he have any debt?” It was said, “Yes, three gold coins.” So the Prophet (peace be upon him) led his funeral prayer.

Then a third funeral was brought and the people requested, “Please lead its funeral prayer as well.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, “Did he leave any wealth?” The people said, “No.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, “Does he have any debt?” The people replied, “Yes! He owes three gold coins.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “You people offer your companion’s funeral prayer (I will not lead it).” Then Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Messenger of Allah! Please lead his funeral prayer, I will pay his debt.” So the Prophet (peace be upon him) led his funeral prayer.
