Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) says that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), people used to sell fruits (before they ripened). Then, when the buyers would pick the fruits and the sellers would demand their price, the buyers would say that the fruit’s core had turned black and the fruit had gone bad, and they would mention other similar defects and quarrel. Therefore, when such cases became frequent before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he, due to these disputes, advised them: “Either suspend the sale (of fruits), or if not, then do not sell until the fruit’s soundness becomes apparent.”
