Description of the father's rights over the son
Hadith 1171
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْبَرْذَعِيُّ ، بِمِصْرَ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ عُبَيْدُ بْنُ خَلَصَةَ بِمَعْرَةِ النُّعْمَانِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ الْمَدَنِيُّ ، عَنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، " إِنَّ أَبِي أَخَذَ مَالِي ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِلرَّجُلِ : اذْهَبْ فَأْتِنِي بِأَبِيكَ ، فَنَزَلَ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُقْرِئُكَ السَّلامَ ، وَيَقُولُ : إِذَا جَاءَكَ الشَّيْخُ ، فَسَلْهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ قَالَهُ فِي نَفْسِهِ مَا سَمِعَتْهُ أُذُنَاهُ ، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ الشَّيْخُ ، قَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَا بَالُ ابْنِكَ يَشْكُوكَ ، أَتُرِيدُ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ مَالَهُ ؟ ، فَقَالَ : سَلْهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، هَلْ أَنْفَقْتُهُ إِلا عَلَى عَمَّاتِهِ أَوْ خَالاتِهِ أَوْ عَلَى نَفْسِي ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِيهِ ، دَعْنَا مِنْ هَذَا أَخْبِرْنَا عَنْ شَيْءٍ قُلْتَهُ فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا سَمِعَتْهُ أُذُنَاكَ ، فَقَالَ الشَّيْخُ : وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا يَزَالُ اللَّهُ يَزِيدُنَا بِكَ يَقِينًا ، لَقَدْ قُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي شَيْئًا مَا سَمِعَتْهُ أُذُنَايَ ، فَقَالَ : قُلْ : وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : غَذَوْتُكَ مَوْلُودًا وَمُنْتُكَ يَافِعًا تُعَلُّ بِمَا أَجْنِي عَلَيْكَ وَتَنْهَلُ إِذَا لَيْلَةٌ ضَافَتْكَ بِالسُّقْمِ لَمْ أَبِتْ لِسُّقْمِكَ إِلا سَاهِرًا أَتَمَلْمَلُ كَأَنِّي أَنَا الْمْطَرُوقُ دُونَكَ بِالَّذِي طُرِقْتَ بِهِ دُونِي فَعَيْنَايَ تَهْمُلُ تَخَافُ الرَّدَى نَفْسِي عَلَيْكَ وَإِنَّهَا لَتَعْلَمُ أَنَّ الْمَوْتَ وَقْتٌ مُؤَجَّلُ فَلَمَّا بَلَغْتَ السِّنَّ وَالْغَايَةَ الَّتِي إِلَيْهَا مَدَى مَا فِيكَ كُنْتُ أُؤَمِّلُ جَعَلْتَ جَزَائِي غِلْظَةً وَفَظَاظَةً كَأَنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْمُنْعِمُ الْمُتَفَضِّلُ فَلَيْتَكَ إِذْ لَمْ تَرْعَ حَقَّ أُبُوَّتِي فَعَلْتَ كَمَا الْجَارُ الْمُجَاوِرُ يَفْعَلُ تَرَاهُ مُعَدًّا لِلْخِلافِ كَأَنَّهُ بِرَدٍّ عَلَى أَهْلِ الصَّوَابِ مُوَكَّلُ قَالَ : فَحِينَئِذٍ أَخَذَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِتَلابِيبِ ابْنِهِ ، وَقَالَ : أَنْتَ وَمَالُكُ لأَبِيكَ "، لا يُرْوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، إِلا بِهَذَا التَّمَامِ وَالشِّعْرِ ، إِلا بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ عُبَيْدُ بْنُ خَلَصَةَ
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! My father has taken all my wealth. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and bring your father to me." Then Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Allah, the Exalted, sends you greetings of peace and says that when that old man comes to you, ask him about a matter he has said in his heart, which his ears have not heard. When the old man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "Your son complains about you, do you want to take his wealth from him?" He said: O Messenger of Allah! Ask him whether I have spent his wealth on his paternal and maternal aunts? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave this matter, tell me what you have said in your heart which your ears have not heard." He said: O Messenger of Allah! Allah, the Exalted, has increased our certainty because of you, and I have composed some verses in my heart which my ears have not heard. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite them, I am listening." (Translation of the verses): (1) I provided you with food in your childhood and also bore your expenses in your youth, which I gave you carefully, and you would take from them before and then again. (2) If any night you fell ill, I would not sleep at night because you were sick, rather I would remain awake and restless. (3) As if this guest of the night who came to you, did not come to you but to me, so my eyes kept shedding tears. (4) My soul feared destruction for you, and it knew that there is an appointed time for death. (5) And when you reached that age and the end of that journey which I had hoped for you. (6) You rewarded me with harshness and frowning, as if you were the benefactor and the one showing kindness to me. (7) I wish that if you had understood the right of my being your father, you would have treated me at least like a neighbor living next door. (8) You will find him ready with every argument, as if he has been appointed to answer against the people of truth. They say, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) caught hold of his collar and said: "You and your wealth belong to your father."
