Hadith 1170
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ الْحَلَبِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ الْعَبْدِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ الْمَكِّيُّ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عُتَيْبَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا مَرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَرَأَى أَصْحَابَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ جَلَدِهِ وَنَشَاطِهِ مَا أَعْجَبَهُمْ ، فَقَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، " لَوْ كَانَ هَذَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنْ كَانَ يَسْعَى عَلَى وَلَدِهِ صِغَارًا فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ يَسْعَى عَلَى أَبَوَيْنِ شَيْخَيْنِ كَبِيرَيْنِ فَفِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ يَسْعَى عَلَى نَفْسِهِ لِيَعِفَّهَا فَفِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ يَسْعَى عَلَى أَهْلِهِ فَفِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ يَسْعَى تَفَاخُرًا وَتَكَاثُرًا فَفِي سَبِيلِ الطَّاغُوتِ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ ، إِلا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، وَلا عَنْهُ إِلا هَمَّامٌ . تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ . وَلا يُرْوَى عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ ، إِلا بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ
Sayyiduna Ka’b bin ‘Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A man passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) were very pleased to see his strength and energy. They said: O Messenger of Allah! If only this were in the way of Allah, how excellent it would be. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If he strives for the livelihood of his young children, he is in the way of Allah; if he works hard for his elderly parents, he is in the way of Allah; if he strives to protect himself from begging and neediness, he is in the way of Allah; if he works for his family, he is in the way of Allah. But if he goes out for pride or to increase his wealth, then his effort is in the way of Taghut (falsehood).”
