Patience in trials and gratitude in well-being
Hadith 1136
حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ الدِّمْيَاطِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عُتَيْبَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ ، قَالَ : " ذَكَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْبَلاءَ ، وَمَا أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لِصَاحِبِهِ مِنْ جَزِيلِ الثَّوَابِ إِذَا هُوَ صَبَرَ ، وَذَكَرَ الْعَافِيَةَ ، وَمَا أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لِصَاحِبِهَا مِنْ جَزِيلِ الثَّوَابِ إِذَا هُوَ شَكَرَ ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، لَئِنْ أُعَافَى فَأَشْكُرُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُبْتَلَى فَأَصْبِرُ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يُحِبُّ مَعَكَ الْعَافِيَةَ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، إِلا إِبْرَاهِيمُ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ بَكْرٌ
Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned trials, and also mentioned the reward that Allah has made complete for those who are patient, and he also mentioned well-being, saying: “Whoever is grateful for it is also deserving of a great reward.” I said: O Messenger of Allah! If I am granted well-being and I am grateful, that is dearer to me than being put to trial and being patient. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The Messengers of Allah also prefer well-being along with you.”
