Virtue of patience over desires and restricted sustenance
Hadith 1055
حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ الأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْبَجَلِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ : "مَنْ قَضَى نَهْمَتَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا حِيلَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ شَهْوَتِهِ فِي الآخِرَةِ ، وَمَنْ مَدَّ عَيْنَهُ إِلَى زِينَةِ الْمُتْرَفِينَ كَانَ مُهِينًا فِي مَلَكُوتِ السَّمَاءِ ، وَمَنْ صَبَرَ عَلَى الْقُوتِ الشَّدِيدِ صَبْرًا جَمِيلا أَسْكَنَهُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْفِرْدَوْسِ حَيْثُ شَاءَ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، إِلا فُضَيْلٌ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، وَلا يُرْوَى عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ ، إِلا بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever fulfills his desires in this world, a barrier will be placed between his desire and himself in the Hereafter. And whoever casts his eyes towards the adornments of the affluent, that person will be disgraced before the inhabitants of the heavens’ kingdom. And whoever patiently endures straitened sustenance, Allah Almighty will place him in that place of Paradise al-Firdaws where he wishes.”
