Even minor show-off is considered shirk
Hadith 1038
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نُوحِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ الْعَسْكَرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْقَطَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ أَخِيهِ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنِ الْفُضَيْلِ بْنِ غَزْوَانَ ، عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ الْيَمَامِيِّ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ : "يَسِيرُ الرِّيَاءِ شِرْكٌ ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُحِبُّ الأَتْقِيَاءَ الأَخْفِيَاءَ الأَبْرِيَاءَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا غَابُوا لَمْ يُفْتَقَدُوا ، وَإِذَا حَضَرُوا لَمْ يُعْرَفُوا ، قُلُوبُهُمْ مَصَابِيحُ الْهُدَى ، يَخْرُجُونَ مِنْ كُلِّ فِتْنَةٍ سَوْدَاءَ مُظْلِمَةٍ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ ، إِلا الْفَيَّاضُ ، وَلا عَنْهُ إِلا طَلْحَةُ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ
Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Even a little bit of showing off is shirk. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, loves the pious, hidden, and pure people—those who, when absent, are not sought after, and when present, are not recognized. Their hearts are lamps of guidance; they will emerge from every dark, black trial."
