Description of the fragrance of the hands of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
Hadith 839
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ اللِّحْيَانِيُّ الْعَكَّاوِيُّ ، بِمَدِينَةِ عَكَّاءَ سَنَةَ خَمْسٍ وَسَبْعِينَ وَمِائَتَيْنِ ، حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ الْعَسْقَلانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وَوَرْقَاءُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْيَشْكُرِيُّ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَتْنِي أُمُّ عَاصِمٍ ، امْرَأَةُ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ السُّلَمِيِّ ، قَالَتْ : " كُنَّا عِنْدَ عُتْبَةَ أَرْبَعَ نِسْوَةٍ ، مَا مِنَّا امْرَأَةٌ إِلا وَهِيَ تَجْتَهِدُ فِي الطِّيبِ لِتَكُونَ أَطْيَبَ مِنْ صَاحِبَتِهَا ، وَمَا يَمَسُّ عُتْبَةُ الطِّيبَ إِلا يَمَسُّ دُهْنًا يَمْسَحُ بِهِ لِحْيَتِهِ ، وَهُوَ أَطْيَبُ رِيحًا مِنَّا ، وَكَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ إِلَى النَّاسِ ، قَالُوا : مَا شَمِمْنَا رِيحًا أَطْيَبَ مِنْ رِيحِ عُتْبَةَ ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يَوْمًا : إِنَّا لَنَجْتَهِدُ فِي الطِّيبِ ، وَلأَنْتَ أَطْيَبُ مِنَّا رِيحًا ، فَمِمَّ ذَاكَ ؟ ، فَقَالَ : أَخَذَنِي الشَّرَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَشَكَوْتُ ذَلِكَ إِلَيْهِ ، فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَتَجَرَّدَ ، فَتَجَرَّدْتُ ، وَقَعَدْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ ، وَأَلْقَيْتُ ثَوْبِي عَلَى فَرْجِي ، فَنَفَثَ فِي يَدِهِ عَلَى ظَهْرِي وَبَطْنِي ، فَعَقَبَ بِي هَذَا الطِّيبُ مِنْ يَوْمَئِذِ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ وَرْقَاءَ إِلا آدَمُ
Utbah bin Farqad Salmi’s wife, Umm Asim, says: We were four women with Utbah, and each of us tried to be more fragrant than the other, and Utbah never applied perfume except that he would oil his beard, and he would be more fragrant than us. When he would go to the people, they would say: We have never smelled a fragrance better than Utbah’s fragrance. So one day I said to him: We apply perfume and make great effort, but still your fragrance is better than ours. What is the reason for this? He said: Once, during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), I developed an itch, so I went to him and complained about it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered me to remove my clothes, so I removed my clothes and covered my private parts with a cloth and sat before him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ruqyah (spiritual healing) on my back and stomach, and from that day, that fragrance has remained in my body until now.
