Al-Mu'jam al-Saghir

Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would often say to me: "Aisha! Which are those verses of poetry of yours?" I would say: "Which verses do you want to hear? There are many verses." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "The ones about gratitude." Then I would say: "May my parents be sacrificed for you, they are these, the poet says: Return the favor to your weak one in such a way that his weakness never troubles you any day, then his good outcomes will increase for you. That weak one will reward and recompense you, he will praise you, and his praising you for your deed is also like giving a reward. When you do good to a good person, even his bucket's rope will not become weak." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "Aisha! When on the Day of Resurrection Allah Almighty will gather the creation, He will say to one of His servants from among His servants, with whom someone had done a favor: 'Did you thank your benefactor?' He will say: 'O my Lord! I thought that this was from You, so I thanked You.' Allah Almighty will say: 'You did not thank Me when you did not thank the person through whose hands I bestowed My favor upon you.'"
