Explanation of the revelation of the verse of Hijab
Hadith 667
حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ بُنْدَارٍ الأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ الْعَدَنِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، قَالَتْ : "كُنْتُ آكُلُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَيْسًا فِي قَعْبٍ ، فَمَرَّ عُمَرُ ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ ، فَدَعَاهُ ، فَأَكَلَ ، فَأَصَابَتْ أُصْبُعُهُ أُصْبَعِي ، فَقَالَ : حَسِّ أَوْهِ أَوْهِ ، لَوْ أُطَاعُ فِيكُنَّ مَا رَأَتْكُنَّ عَيْنٌ "، فنزلت آيَةُ الْحِجَابِ لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ ، إِلا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I was eating sweet dish with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the same bowl when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him, and he also ate. His finger touched my finger, so he said: Oh, oh, alas! If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had accepted my opinion about you, no eye would have seen you. Then the verses of hijab were revealed.
