Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: When the day of Khaybar came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a man towards the enemy, but he became cowardly. Then Muhammad bin Maslamah came and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have never seen anything like today, then he began to weep. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for safety and well-being. You do not know with which of these things you will be tested. When you meet them, say: Allahumma anta rabbuna wa rabbuhum wa nawāsīnā biyadik wa innamā taqtuluhum anta (O Allah! You are our Lord and their Lord, our forelocks are in Your hand, and You alone will kill them)." Then sit on the ground; when they come, then stand up and say takbeer (Allahu Akbar). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tomorrow I will send a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him; he will not turn his back and flee." When the next day came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was suffering from severe eye pain. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come." He said: O Messenger of Allah! I cannot even see the place of my feet. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his saliva to his eyes, and the flag was tied for him, and the great flag was handed over to him. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! On what basis should I fight? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That they testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah. If they do so, they will protect their blood and wealth from me except by its right, and their reckoning will be with Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."
