Explanation of the three qualities of Sayyiduna Alaa Hadhrami (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 572
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ بِسْطَامٍ الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ الْبَصْرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ صَاحِبُ الْهَرَوِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنْ أَبِي كَعْبٍ صَاحِبِ الْحَرِيرِ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي السَّلِيلِ ضُرَيْبِ بْنِ نُقَيْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : " لَمَّا بَعَثَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْعَلاءَ الْحَضْرَمِيَّ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ تَبِعْتُهُ ، فَرَأَيْتُ مِنْهُ ثَلاثَ خِصَالٍ لا أَدْرِي أَيَّتَهُنَّ أَعْجَبُ ، انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى شَاطِئِ الْبَحْرِ ، فَقَالَ : سَمُّوا اللَّهَ ، وَاقْتَحِمُوا ، فَسَمَّيْنَا ، وِاقْتَحَمْنَا ، فَعَبَرْنَا ، فَمَا بَلَّ الْمَاءُ إِلا أَسَافِلَ خُفَافِ إِبِلِنَا ، فَلَمَّا قَفَلْنَا ، صِرْنَا مَعَهُ بِفَلاةٍ مِنَ الأَرْضِ ، وَلَيْسَ مَعَنَا مَاءٌ ، فَشَكَوْنَا إِلَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ فَصَلَّى : صَلُّوا رَكْعَتَيْنِ ، ثُمَّ دَعَا اللَّهَ ، فَإِذَا سَحَابَةٌ مثل التُّرْسِ ، ثُمَّ أَرْخَتْ عَزَالِيَهَا ، فَشَرِبْنَا ، وَأَسْقَيْنَا ، وَمَاتَ ، فَدَفَنَّاهُ فِي الرَّمَلِ ، فَلَمَّا سِرْنَا غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ قُلْنَا : يَجِيءُ السَّبْعُ فَيَأْكُلُهُ ، فَرَجَعْنَا ، فَلَمْ نَرَهُ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ أَبِي كَعْبٍ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ ، صَاحِبِ الْحَرِيرِ الْبَصْرِيِّ ، إِلا إِبْرَاهِيمُ صَاحِبُ الْهَرَوِيُّ ، وَلَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ ، إِلا أَبُو كَعْبٍ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna ‘Ala’ Hadhrami (may Allah be pleased with him) towards Bahrain, I also went after him. I saw three qualities in him. I do not know which of these qualities is dearest to me. When we reached the shore of the sea, he said: Enter by reciting Bismillah. We recited Bismillah and entered, and we crossed the sea. Only the lower socks of our camels got wet from the water. When we returned, we came to a dry land. There was no water there. So we complained to him about this, and he started to pray. Then everyone prayed two rak‘ahs and made supplication, and suddenly a cloud appeared like a shield, then it spread its sides, so we drank from it and gave water to the camels. Then when he passed away, we buried him in the sand. When we were about to leave from there, we said, “Let no wild animal eat him.” When we returned there, we did not find him there.
