Sayyiduna Abu Humayd Sa‘idi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took some cooked dates as a loan from a man. When that man came to ask for repayment, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “At the moment, I have nothing. If you wish, give me some more time so that when something comes, I will give it to you.” The man said: “Wa ghadra!” meaning, “This is deception.” Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O ‘Umar! Leave us, for the one who has a right is allowed to speak. Go to Khawlah bint Hakim Ansariyyah and bring some dates from her.” He went there, and she said: “By Allah, I only have dates for my own need.” He returned and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: “Take from her and repay the loan.” When he had repaid the loan, he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who asked: “Did you give in full?” He replied: “Yes, I gave in full, and I gave good quality.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The best servants of Allah are those who give in full and give good quality.”
