Description of taking oaths
Hadith 461
حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ الثَّقَفِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ بَهْزِ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ " مَرَّ بِقَوْمٍ يَرْمُونَ وَهُمْ يَحْلِفُونَ أَخْطَأْتَ وَاللَّهِ أَصَبْتَ وَاللَّهِ ، فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمْسَكُوا ، فَقَالَ : ارْمُوا فَإِنَّ أَيْمَانَ الرُّمَاةِ لَغْوٌ لا حِنْثَ فِيهَا وَلا كَفَّارَةَ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ بَهْزٍ ، إِلا سُفْيَانُ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ
Sayyiduna Bahz bin Hakim narrates from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed by some people while they were taking oaths: "By Allah, I made a mistake," "By Allah, I spoke the truth." When they saw the Prophet (peace be upon him), they stopped. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Shoot arrows, for the oaths of archers are idle; there is no perjury in them, nor is there any expiation upon them."
