Description of the accountability of the collector of charity
Hadith 414
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى بْنِ السَّكَنِ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ أَبُو مَنْصُورٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي حُمَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ " اسْتَعْمَلَ رَجُلا مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ ، يُقَالُ لَهُ : ابْنُ اللُّتْبِيَّةِ عَلَى الصَّدَقَةِ ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ بَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيُحَاسِبَهُ ، فَقَالَ : هَذَا لَكُمْ ، وَهَذَا أُهْدِيَ لِي ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّا نَسْتَعْمِلُ رِجَالا مِنْكُمْ عَلَى مَا وَلانَا اللَّهُ ، فَإِذَا قَدِمَ أَحَدُكُمْ ، قَالَ : هَذَا لَكُمْ ، وَهَذَا أُهْدِيَ إِلَيَّ ، فَهَلا جَلَسَ فِي بَيْتِ أَبِيهِ وَأُمِّهِ فَيَنْظُرَ مَا يُهْدَى إِلَيْهِ ، مَنْ عَمِلَ مِنْكُمْ عَمَلا فَلْيَأْتِنَا بِقَلِيلِهِ وَكَثِيرِهِ ، وَلَيَحْذَرْ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ بِبَعِيرٍ يَحْمِلُهُ عَلَى رَقَبَتِهِ لَهُ رُغَاءٌ أَوْ بَقَرَةٍ لَهَا خُوَارٌ أَوْ شَاةٍ تَيْعَرُ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، إِلا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ
Sayyiduna Abu Humayd Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed a man from the Ansar over the charity. His name was Ibn al-Lutbiyyah. When he returned, he was summoned so that his account could be taken. He said: "This is yours, and this was given to me as a gift." When this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "We send one of you as an agent over the wealth which Allah has made us guardians of, and when he returns, he says: 'This is yours, and this was given to me as a gift.' Why does he not sit in his father's or mother's house and see if he is given any gift? Whoever among you works for us in any matter, let him present whatever little or much he brings before us. Let each of you beware that he will come on the Day of Resurrection carrying a camel on his neck that is groaning, or a cow that is mooing, or a goat that is bleating."
