Prohibition of reciting anything other than Surah al-Fatiha behind the imam in audible prayers
Hadith 266
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُمُعَةَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ مَزْيَدٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ ، عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلاةً جَهَرَ فِيهَا بِالْقِرَاءَةِ ، ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ إِلَيْنَا ، فَقَالَ : أَلا أُرَاكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ مَعَ إِمَامِكُمْ ؟ ، قُلْنَا : أَجَلْ ، يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ : إِنِّي أَقُولُ مَالِي أُنَازَعُ الْقُرْآنَ ، لا تَفْعَلُوا إِذَا جَهَرَ الإِمَامُ بِالْقُرْآنِ فَلا يَقْرَأْ إِلا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ ، فَإِنَّهُ لا صَلاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، إِلا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، وَالْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مَزْيَدٍ مِمَّنْ سَمِعَ ابْنَ لَهِيعَةَ قَبْلَ احْتِرَاقِ كُتُبِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led us in a prayer in which he recited aloud. Then he turned towards us and said: "Beware! I see that you recite behind your Imam?" We said: Yes, O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I am saying, what is the reason that I am contending with the Qur'an? So when the Imam recites aloud, do not do so, only recite Surah Al-Fatihah, because whoever does not recite Surah Al-Fatihah, his prayer is not valid."
