The chapter on the prohibition of eating domesticated donkey meat and the dislike of garlic and onion
Hadith 170
حَدَّثَنَا حَمْزَةُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْكَاتِبُ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا نُعَيْمُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، عَنْ بَحِيرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ مَعْدَانَ ، عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي ثَعْلَبَةَ الْخُشَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : " غَزَوْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَصَبْنَا حَمْرَاءَ مِنْ حُمْرِ الْيَهُودِ ، فَذَبَحْنَاهَا ، وَطَبَخْنَاهَا ، فَأُخْبِرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَمَرَ مُنَادِيًا ، فَنَادَى فِي النَّاسِ أَنَّ لُحُومَ حُمْرَ الإِنْسِ لا تَحِلُّ ، حَرَّمَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَصَابُوا فِي حِيطَانِهَا بَصَلا وَثُومًا ، فَأَكَلُوا مِنْهَا وَالْقَوْمُ جِيَاعٌ فَرَاحُوا ، فَإِذَا رِيحُ الْمَسْجِدِ بَصَلٌ وَثُومٌ ، فَقَالَ : رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ الْخَبِيثَةِ ، فَلا يَقْرَبْنَا فِي مَسْجِدِنَا "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ بَحِيرٍ ، إِلا بَقِيَّةُ ، وَلا يُرْوَى عَنْ أَبِي ثَعْلَبَةَ الْخُشَنِيِّ ، إِلا بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٌ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ بَقِيَّةَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ ، يَقُولُ اسْمُ أَبِي ثَعْلَبَةَ الْخُشَنِيُّ : لاشُومَةُ بْنُ جُرْثُومَةَ
Sayyiduna Abu Tha’labah al-Khushani, may Allah be pleased with him, says: We fought in battle with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and we came across some of the domestic donkeys belonging to the Jews, so we slaughtered them and cooked them. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was informed of this, he ordered a caller to announce that the meat of domestic donkeys is not lawful; the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, has forbidden them. In the gardens of that land, they found thum (i.e., garlic) and onions. The people were hungry, so they ate them, and when they rested, the mosque became filled with the smell of garlic and onions. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever eats from this foul tree should not come near our mosque.”
