Statement about the removal of knowledge
Hadith 77
حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى السِّجِسْتَانِيُّ ، بِدِمَشْقَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ الْمَدَنِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، مَوْلَى مُزَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَقْبِضُ الْعِلْمَ انْتِزَاعًا يَنْتَزِعُهُ مِنَ النَّاسِ ، وَلَكِنْ يَقْبِضُ الْعِلْمَ بِقَبْضِ الْعُلَمَاءِ ، حَتَّى إِذَا لَمْ يَبْقَ عَالِمًا اتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ رُؤَسَاءَ جُهَّالا ، فَسُئِلُوا فَأَفْتَوْا بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ ، فَضَلُّوا ، وَأَضَلُّوا "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ ، إِلا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مَوْلَى مُزَيْنَةَ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah Almighty will not seize knowledge by snatching it away from the people, but He will take away knowledge by the death of the scholars. When no scholar remains, people will take ignorant ones as leaders; when they are asked for religious verdicts, they will issue fatwas without knowledge. They will go astray themselves and will lead others astray as well.”
