Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Supplication is worship.” Then he recited this verse: “And your Lord said: Call upon Me, I will respond to you. Indeed, those who are too proud for My worship will enter Hell humiliated.” “Your Lord has said: Call upon Me, I will answer you. Those who are arrogant regarding My worship will enter Hell in disgrace.”

1479. Commentary: When supplication (dua) is worship, then supplicating to other than Allah is shirk (associating partners with Allah). Therefore, commonly uttered phrases such as "Ya Rasul Allah," "Ya Ali," "Ya Husayn," "Ya Ghawth," etc., making supplications or raising slogans in this manner, or writing and hanging their emblems, is clear shirk. And it is obligatory to avoid these. It is incumbent upon the scholars of truth to continuously make the public aware of the importance and sensitivity of the issue of tawhid (the oneness of Allah).

Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
To ask any created being for something that is solely within Allah’s power is to worship that created being, and therefore it is shirk (associating partners with Allah).
Whether that created being is an inanimate object such as a stone, the sun, stars, trees, etc., or a living being such as an animal, jinn, angel, saint (wali), or prophet (nabi), to request anything from them in a manner that transcends natural means is shirk.

➊ Our esteemed researcher has declared the narrations reported from Anas and Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhuma) to be weak in terms of their chain of transmission, whereas other scholars have, on the basis of corroborating reports, considered the narration from Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) to be hasan (good), and have discussed this narration in detail. From this, it becomes evident that the hadith reported from Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) is of the hasan grade due to supporting evidence, and this opinion appears to be closer to correctness.
And Allah knows best.

➋ In this hadith, supplication (du‘a) has been declared as worship (‘ibadah).
This means that supplications made to other than Allah for the fulfillment of needs and the resolution of difficulties are, in effect, worship of other than Allah. For this reason, supplicating to other than Allah is shirk (associating partners with Allah).
