Description of the supplication for expiation of a gathering

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ الضَّبِّيُّ الْجَمْرِيُّ الْبَصْرِيُّ ، فِي بَنِي جَمْرَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُؤَدِّبُ ، عَنْ مُصْعَبِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ ، عَنْ أَخِيهِ مُقَاتِلِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ ، عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ ، عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ "لا يَقُومُ مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ حَتَّى يَقُولَ : سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ ، ثُمَّ يَقُولُ : إِنَّهَا كَفَّارَةٌ لِمَا يَكُونُ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ ، عَنْ رَافِعٍ ، إِلا مُقَاتِلٌ ، وَلا عَنْ مُقَاتِلٍ ، إِلا أَخُوهُ مُصْعَبٌ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ
Sayyiduna Rafi‘ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not rise from his gathering without reciting this supplication: “«سُبْحَانَكَ اللّٰهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ»”, then he would say: “This is an expiation for the gathering.”

Benefits and Issues:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was free from purposeless speech; his action was a teaching for the Ummah. Therefore, every Muslim should practice this blessed supplication.
Furthermore, one should make every possible effort to keep their gatherings free from vain talk, so that there is no backbiting, slander, lying, idle chatter, or loud laughter in them.
And to think that, since I will recite the supplication of expiation for the gathering (du'a-e-kafarah majlis) at the end, I can say and do whatever I wish, is impermissible. It is not known whether one will get the opportunity to recite the supplication or not, and then whether it will be accepted or not.
