Description of Adam (peace be upon him) seeking forgiveness from Allah
Hadith 903
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ الصَّدَفِيُّ الْمِصْرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْمَدَنِيُّ الْفِهْرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْمَدَنِيُّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ : "لَمَّا أَذْنَبَ آدَمُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الذَّنْبَ الَّذِي أَذْنَبَهُ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَى الْعَرْشِ ، فَقَالَ : أَسْأَلُكَ بِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ إِلا غَفَرْتَ لِي ، فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ ، وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ وَمَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ ؟ ، فَقَالَ : تَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ ، لَمَّا خَلَقْتَنِي رَفَعْتُ رَأْسِي إِلَى عَرْشِكَ ، فَإِذَا فِيهِ مَكْتُوبٌ : لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، فَعَلِمْتُ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ أَعْظَمَ عِنْدَكَ قَدْرًا مِمَّنْ جَعَلْتَ اسْمَهُ مَعَ اسْمِكَ ، فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِلَيْهِ ، يَا آدَمُ ، إِنَّهُ آخِرُ النَّبِيِّينَ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِكَ ، وَإِنَّ أُمَّتَهُ آخِرُ الأُمَمِ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِكَ ، وَلَوْلاهُ يَا آدَمُ مَا خَلَقْتُكَ "، لا يُرْوَى عَنْ عُمَرَ ، إِلا بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ
Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Adam (peace be upon him) was about to commit the sin which he committed, he raised his head towards the Throne and said: O Allah! I ask You by the right of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to forgive me. So Allah Almighty revealed to him: 'Who is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and what is he?' He said: Your name is Blessed; when You created me, I raised my head towards Your Throne and suddenly saw written there: «لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ» So I knew that the one whose name You have joined with Your name, none can be more honored in Your sight than him.' So Allah Almighty revealed to him: 'O Adam! He is the last Prophet from your descendants, and his Ummah from your descendants will be the last of all communities, and O Adam! If it were not for him, I would not have created you.'"
