حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيُّ أَبُو حَفْصٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ الشَّامِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَلامُ أَبُو الْمُنْذِرِ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ ابْنِ بَهْدَلَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ فِي غَنَمٍ لآلِ أَبِي مُعَيْطٍ ، فَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَقَالَ : " يَا غُلامُ ، عِنْدَكَ لَبَنٌ ؟ ، فَقُلْتُ : نَعَمْ ، وَلَكِنِّي مُؤْتَمَنٌ قَالَ : فَهَلْ عِنْدَكَ شَاةٌ لَمْ يَنْزُ عَلَيْهَا الْفَحْلُ ؟ ، قُلْتُ : نَعَمْ ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِشَاةٍ شَطُورٍ ، قَالَ سَلامٌ : وَالشَّطُورُ الَّتِي لَيْسَ لَهَا ضَرْعٌ ، فَمَسَحَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَكَانَ الضَّرْعِ ، وَمَا كَانَ لَهَا ضَرْعٌ ، فَإِذَا الضَّرْعُ حَافِلٌ مَمْلُوءٌ لَبَنًا ، فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِصَخْرَةٍ مَنْقُورَةٍ ، فَحَلَبَ ، ثُمَّ سَقَى أَبَا بَكْرِ وَسَقَانِي ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِلْضَرْعِ : اقْلُصْ فَقَلَصَ ، فَرَجَعَ كَمَا كَانَ ، فَأَنَا رَأَيْتُ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَلِّمْنِي ، فَمَسَحَ رَأْسِي ، وَقَالَ : بَارَكَ اللَّهُ فِيكَ ، فَإِنَّكَ غُلامٌ مُعَلَّمٌ ، فَأَسْلَمْتُ وَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَبَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَهُ عَلَى حِرَاءَ إِذْ أنزلت عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ وَالْمُرْسَلاتِ عُرْفًا فَأَخَذْتُهَا ، وَإِنَّهَا رَطْبَةٌ مِنْ فِيهِ ، فَأَخَذْتُ مِنْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَبْعِينَ سُورَةً وَأَخَذْتُ بَقِيَّةَ الْقُرْآنِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ سَلامٍ ، إِلا إِبْرَاهِيمُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I used to graze the goats of the family of Abi Mu’it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, and with him was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). They said: “Boy! Do you have any milk?” I said: Yes! But I am entrusted (with these goats). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do you have any goat with which a male goat has not mated? I said: Yes! A goat without udders. They said: Peace be upon you. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over the place of its udders, and though it had no udders, suddenly milk came into its udders and they became full. So I brought a hollowed-out stone to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he milked it into that, then gave Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to drink, and gave me to drink as well. Then he said to the udders: “Shrink.” So they shrank as they were before. When I saw this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I said: Teach me this as well. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over my head and said: “May Allah bless you, you are a learned boy.” So I became Muslim and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we were with him at Hira, and Surah Mursalat was revealed, so I took it, it was fresh from the mouth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then I memorized seventy surahs from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the rest of the Qur’an I took from the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hadith Commentary:
Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu described his actual state; although there is a virtue implied in it, his intention was neither pride nor arrogance. However, to say such a thing out of pride and arrogance is prohibited.
“Innamal a‘malu bin-niyyat” (Actions are only by intentions).
The statement of Shaqiq is worthy of consideration, because Ibn Abi Dawud narrated from Zuhri, who said that Mujahid did not approve of this statement of Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu (Wahidi).
It is true.
﴿And above every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing﴾

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu ta'ala anhu has described his actual state. There was no expression of pride or arrogance in his intention, as he himself clarified that he is not the best among the Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma'in. However, the statement of Shaqiq rahimahullah is open to consideration, because Imam Zuhri rahimahullah has stated that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not like this statement of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu ta'ala anhu. It is possible that this was due to a difference in perspective.

Indeed, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu ta'ala anhu was a scholar of the Noble Qur'an and an excellent reciter, but he insisted on retaining his own codex (mushaf) in comparison to the Uthmani codex. The Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma'in did not approve of this, even though there had already been consensus among all the Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma'in on the codex of Uthman radi Allahu ta'ala anhu. (: Fath al-Bari: 9/62)

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The emergence of the Khawarij has occurred in various eras and will continue to occur in the future. They commit extremism in the name of the Qur’an. In their first emergence, they raised the slogan “Inil hukmu illa lillah” (“The judgment is only for Allah” ) and rebelled against Ali radi Allahu anhu and Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu.
➋ (Al-harbu khud‘ah)
War is a stratagem and a secret tactic.
The group or party that adopts a better stratagem and excellent planning becomes successful. One should never be heedless of the enemy’s stratagem and planning, just as nowadays Muslims, by being heedless of the schemes of the Jews and Hindus, have fallen into their trap.
Benefits and Issues:
