حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ يُوسُفَ الْعَابِدُ الأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْفُرَاتِ الرَّازِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدَةَ بْنِ الْحُصَيْبِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : "مَنْ كُنْتُ مَوْلاهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَوْلاهُ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ ، إِلا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْفُرَاتِ
Buraidah bin Husaib narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever I am the master of, Ali is also his master."

There is a specific reason for the statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: (Whoever I am his mawla, Ali is his mawla).
It is said that when Usamah radi Allahu anhu said to Ali radi Allahu anhu: (You are not my mawla, my mawla is only the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), meaning, "You are not my master, rather the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is," it was on this occasion that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: (Whoever I am his mawla, Ali is his mawla).
Imam Shafi'i rahimahullah says that here "wali" means (wilā’ al-Islam), that is, Islamic friendship and brotherhood.
Therefore, the argument of the Shia, who use this statement to claim that Ali radi Allahu anhu was the rightful successor to the caliphate after the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, is not correct.
