Statement about the greatness of understanding religion
Hadith 80
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ الْبَجَلِيُّ الْكُوفِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُقَدَّمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمِّي الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِي بَيْتِ مَيْمُونَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، فَوَضَعَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَهُورًا ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَنْ وَضَعَهُ ؟ ، قِيلَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ، فَضَرَبَ عَلَى مَنْكِبِي ، وَقَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ ، فَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ ، وَعَلِّمْهُ التَّأْوِيلَ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ دَاوُدَ ، إِلا الْقَاسِمُ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ مُقَدَّمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that I was in the house of Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), so I placed water for the ablution of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who placed this?" Someone said: Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) did. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on my shoulder and said: "O Allah! Grant him understanding in the religion and teach him the interpretation and explanation of the Qur'an and Hadith."
