Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "This Ummah will be divided into seventy-three sects, all of whom will enter Hell except one." The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Which sect will that be?" He, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: "That which I and my Companions are upon today."

Benefits and Issues: ➊ The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) foretold future events exactly as they would occur, and they happened in precisely that manner. This is a proof of the Prophethood and truthfulness of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
➋ The reason for informing about the division into sects is so that Muslims may strive to adopt the correct approach amidst these differences.
➌ The real cause of discord among the Christians and Muslims is the following of base desires and prejudice. These crimes are those that lead to Hellfire.
➍ The true group of Muslims is that which has continued upon the way of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum). People have taken the form of various sects apart from this group, but the original group still remains established. Muslims are commanded to remain with and follow this group.
➎ Those who separated from the group did so due to base desires or incorrect interpretations. Those who did not join these sects remained steadfast upon the Qur’an and Hadith. This alone is the straight path.
➏ Salvation does not depend on adopting a particular party name, but rather on acting upon the Qur’an and Sunnah. If those who act upon the Book and Sunnah become known by different names in various languages and regions, this does not mean that they have become separate sects; rather, all such organizations or groups are included in al-jama‘ah.
