Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Aws and Khazraj were two tribes of the Ansar, and there was enmity between them from the time of ignorance. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, this enmity left them and Allah placed affection between them. Once, they were sitting in a gathering when a man from Aws recited a poem in which Khazraj was insulted, and a man from Khazraj likewise recited a poem in which Aws was insulted. In this way, they continued to exchange examples of poetry until they leapt upon each other, then they took up arms and came out for battle. This news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and revelation also descended upon him. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) hurriedly came out while his shins were still uncovered. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw them and called out: «يَاأَيُّهَاالَّذِينَآمَنُوااتَّقُوااللَّهَحَقَّتُقَاتِهِوَلَاتَمُوتُنَّإِلَّاوَأَنْتُمْمُسْلِمُونَ» "O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims." When he finished reciting the verses, they put down their weapons and embraced each other, weeping.
