Explanation of the permissibility of combining the name Muhammad and the kunya Abu al-Qasim
Hadith 651
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عِقَالٍ أَبُو الْفَوَارِسِ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ النُّفَيْلِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحَجَبِيُّ ، عَنْ جَدَّتِهِ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ شَيْبَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، قَالَتْ : جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَتْ : " إِنِّي وُلِدَ لِي غُلامٌ ، فَسَمَّيْتُهُ مُحَمَّدًا ، وَكَنَّيْتُهُ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ، فَذُكِرَ لِي أَنَّكَ تَكْرَهُ ذَلِكَ ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَا الَّذِي أَحَلَّ اسْمِي وَحَرَّمَ كُنْيَتِي ، وَمَا الَّذِي حَرَّمَ كُنْيَتِي وَأَحَلَّ اسْمِي "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ صَفِيَّةَ ، إِلا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ ، وَلا يُرْوَى عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، إِلا بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: A child was born to me, I named him Muhammad and gave him the kunyah (patronymic) Abu al-Qasim. Then I found out that you dislike this. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who has made my name lawful and my kunyah unlawful?" Or he said: "Who has made my kunyah unlawful and my name lawful?"
