Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports that a man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I find such thoughts in my heart that I consider it better to become charcoal than to utter them." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is clear faith."

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah! one of us has thoughts of such nature that he would rather be reduced to charcoal than speak about them. He said: Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great. Praise be to Allah Who has reduced the guile of the devil to evil prompting. Ibn Qudamah said "reduced his matter" instead of "reduced his guile". Ibn Qudamah said "reduced his matter" instead of "reduced his guile".
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues: If the thoughts that come to the heart remain at the level of passing notions and ideas, that is, whispers (wasawis), before any firm resolve (azm) is made, then there is no accountability for them.

Jurisprudence of the Hadith: ➊ From this hadith, it is understood that even in the hearts of those with correct belief among the people of truth, Satan continuously tries to cast whispers (waswasah). ➋ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) were at the highest levels of faith. They had intense aversion to satanic whispers. ➌ «حممة» refers to a burnt coal. ➍ One should say “alhamdulillah” (all praise is due to Allah) for His grace and bounty.
