Hadith 649

Nafi’ says: I was riding behind Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) when he suddenly passed by a shepherd who was playing a flute. He struck his she-camel on its face to turn it away from that path and put his fingers in his ears. Then he kept asking me repeatedly: “Can you still hear that sound?” until the sound ceased. I said: “Now I can no longer hear it.” So he put his mount back on that path and said: “This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do.”

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
The statement of Imam Abu Dawud is not correct; this narration is hasan and, according to Allamah al-Albani rahimahullah, it is sahih. It is established from other ahadith that (lahw al-hadith) refers to musical instruments, which are absolutely not permitted.
And especially, to play the name of Allah and His Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to the beat of the tabla is an extreme disrespect to them, and all frivolities of music are haram except for the duff.

The Sound of the Flute
Mahmood bin Khalid ad-Dimashqi has transmitted with a sound chain from Imam Nafi‘ that Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar radi Allahu anhuma once heard the sound of a flute, so he put his fingers in his ears and said: The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did the same.

Regarding this hadith, Allamah Ibn al-Wazir al-Yamani has written in "Tawdih al-Afkar" [ج 1 ص 150] that: «صحيح على الأصح» The most correct view is that this hadith is authentic.

Commentary:
Benefits and Issues:

The aforementioned narration has been declared weak in its chain by our esteemed scholar and researcher. However, the action of Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma and his statement that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam also used to do so, is narrated through Nafi’ with a sound (sahih) and good (hasan) chain in Musnad Ahmad, Sunan Abi Dawud, Ibn Hibban, Tabarani Saghir, and Bayhaqi. Other scholars have also declared these narrations to be sound and good. However, in these narrations, instead of the sound of the drum, the sound of the flute is mentioned.
For details, see:
(al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 8/132, 133, 134; Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Manners, Chapter: Dislike of Singing and Musical Instruments, Hadith: 4924, 4926; Tabarani: 1/131; Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith: 2013; Bayhaqi: 10/222)
Therefore, even from authentic ahadith, it is supported that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam disliked the sound of musical instruments.

One should avoid sinful sounds as much as possible.

Other than the duff (frame drum), it is not permissible to play or listen to any musical instrument.

It is also clear from this that those who derive the permissibility of drums, musical instruments, and all kinds of music and entertainment from the allowance of the duff are completely mistaken.
All the aforementioned types, except for the duff, are absolutely impermissible, categorically forbidden, and satanic acts.
