Explanation of the virtue of killing the Khawarij
Hadith 596
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ الْبَاغَنْدِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ الضَّالُّ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ ، عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ السَّلْمَانِيِّ ، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ ، "لَمَّا قَتَلَ الْخَوَارِجَ يَوْمَ النَّهَرِ ، قَالَ : اطْلُبُوا الْمُجَدَّعَ ، الْمُخَدَّجَ ، فَطَلَبُوهُ ، فَلَمْ يَجِدُوهُ ، ثُمَّ طَلَبُوهُ ، فَوَجَدُوهُ ، فَقَالَ : لَوْلا أَنْ تَبْطَرُوا لَحَدَّثْتُكُمْ بِمَا قَضَى اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِمَنْ قَتَلَهُمْ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، إِلا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ
Ubaidah Salmani says: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) killed the Khawarij on the day of Nahrawan, he said: Look among them for the man with defective limbs, who is noseless and of lowly birth. So they searched for him but did not find him, then searched again and found him. Then he said: If you do not become arrogant, I will narrate to you that hadith—how Allah has decreed rewards for the one who killed them, through the tongue of His Prophet.
