Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) began to say from the pulpit of Kufa: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When an adulterer commits adultery, he is not a believer at that moment, and when a thief steals, he is not a believer at that moment, and when a plunderer plunders, he is not a believer at that moment, and when a man drinks wine, he is not a believer at that moment." Someone asked: O Commander of the Faithful! Does the one who commits adultery become a disbeliever? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to command us to keep the hadiths about concessions ambiguous. A believer does not commit adultery considering it lawful; if he considers it lawful, then he becomes a disbeliever. Similarly, a believer does not consider theft lawful; if he believes it to be lawful, then he becomes a disbeliever. And when he drinks wine and believes it to be lawful for him, then he will be a disbeliever; likewise, the plunderer does not consider it lawful while being a believer, and if he considers it lawful, then he becomes a disbeliever.
