Description of the importance of congregational prayer
Hadith 446
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الأَشْعَثِ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ بِمَدِينَةِ الْطَرَسُوسِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا الْجَرَّاحُ بْنُ مَلِيحٍ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ ذِي حِمَايَةٍ ، عَنْ غَيْلانَ بْنِ جَامِعٍ ، عَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الأَسْوَدِ السُّوَائِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : حَجَجْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَجَّةً ، فَصَلَّيْتُ مَعَهُ صَلاةَ الْفَجْرِ بِمِنًى ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلاتِهِ إِذَا رَجُلانِ خَلْفَ النَّاسِ لَمْ يُصَلِّيَا مَعَ النَّاسِ ، فَقَالَ : عَلَيَّ بِالرَّجُلَيْنِ ، فَجِيءَ بِهِمَا تَرْعَدُ فَرَائِصُهُمَا ، فَقَالَ : "أَمَا صَلَّيْتُمَا مَعَنَا ؟ ، فَقَالا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّا كُنَّا صَلَّيْنَا فِي رِحَالِنَا وَظَنَنَّا أَنْ لا نُدْرِكَ الصَّلاةَ قَالَ : فَلا تَفْعَلُوا إِذَا صَلَّيْتُمَا فِي رِحَالِكُمَا ، ثُمَّ أَدْرَكْتُمَا الصَّلاةَ فَصَلِّيَا تَكُونُ لَكُمَا نَافِلَةً ، فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا : اسْتَغْفِرْ لِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ ، اغْفِرْ لَهُ ، فَازْدَحَمَ النَّاسُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَنَا يَوْمَئِذٍ كَأَشَبِّ الرِّجَالِ وَأَقْوَاهُمْ ، فَزَاحَمْتُ النَّاسَ حَتَّى أَخَذْتُ بِيَدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَوَضَعْتُهَا عَلَى صَدْرِي ، فَلَمْ أَرَ شَيْئًا كَانَ أَبْرَدَ وَلا أَطْيَبَ مِنْ يَدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ غَيْلانَ ، إِلا ابْنُ ذِي حِمَايَةَ
Sayyiduna Yazid bin Al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and offered the morning prayer in Mina. When the prayer was finished, he saw that two men were sitting at the back; they had not prayed with the congregation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring them to me." When they were brought, the flesh under their arms was trembling. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you not pray with us?" They said: O Messenger of Allah! We had already prayed at home because we thought we might miss the prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not do this in the future. When you have prayed at home and then find the congregation, then pray with them; it will be counted as a voluntary prayer for you." One of them said: O Messenger of Allah! Pray for forgiveness for us. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for their forgiveness. People gathered around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) like a flock of sheep. At that time, I was a young and strong man, so I made my way through the crowd and went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), took his hand and placed it on my chest. I have never seen a hand more excellent and cooler than the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
