Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Makkah, he performed Tawaf of the Sacred House seven times. Then he exited from the door of Safa and ascended the hill of Safa and said: "We begin from where Allah has begun." Then he recited this verse: "Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah." (Al-Baqarah: 158) "Surely, Safa and Marwah are among the signs of Allah."

At that time, Safa and Marwah were outside the mosque. Nowadays, they have come within the boundaries of the mosque, and in fact, quite far inside. (For further details, see Hadith: 2964)
