Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Two men whom Allah will have granted much wealth and children, it will be said to them on the Day of Resurrection: ‘O so-and-so!’ He will say: O Allah! I am present, and all goodness is with You. Allah will say: ‘Did I not give you abundant wealth and children?’ He will say: Why not, O my Lord! He will say: ‘Then what did you do in gratitude for that?’ He will say: O Allah! I left that wealth for my children so that they would not become destitute. Allah, the Exalted, will say: ‘Beware! If you had known, you would have laughed little and wept much. Beware! That very thing you feared for them, I have sent upon them.’ Then Allah, the Exalted, will ask the second person and say to him: ‘O so-and-so!’ He too will say: O Lord! I am present, and all goodness is with You. Allah, the Exalted, will ask: ‘Did I not give you abundant wealth and children?’ He will say: Why not, O my Lord! Allah, the Exalted, will say: ‘What did you do with it?’ He will say: O Allah! I spent it in Your path and in obedience to You, and I left them relying on Your justice. Allah, the Exalted, will say: ‘If you had known, you would have laughed much and wept little. That which you relied upon, We have given to you.’”
