Alqamah says: I went to Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of Ashura, and there was a bowl of tharid placed before him. I said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! Is this not the day of Ashura? He said: Yes! It is the day of Ashura. We used to fast on the day of Ashura with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) before the obligation of Ramadan. When Ramadan was made obligatory, it abrogated the fast of Ashura. Then he said: Sit down. So I sat down and began to eat.
