The Prophet's (peace be upon him) love for his ummah
Hadith 323
حَدَّثَنَا مَسْعَدَةُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ الْعَطَّارُ الْمَكِّيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ الْحِزَامِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مَوْلَى مُزَيْنَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ مُصْعَبِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، قَالَ : خَرَجَ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ لِطَلَبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَلَمْ يَجِدْهُ ، فَطَلَبَهُ فِي بُيُوتِهِ ، فَلَمْ يَجِدْهُ ، فَأَتْبَعَهُ فِي سِكَّةٍ حَتَّى دُلَّ عَلَيْهِ فِي جَبَلِ ثَوَابٍ فَخَرَجَ حَتَّى رَقِيَ جَبَلَ ثَوَابٍ ، فَنَظَرَ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالا ، فَبَصُرَ بِهِ فِي الْكَهْفِ الَّذِي اتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ إِلَيْهِ طَرِيقًا إِلَى مَسْجِدِ الْفَتْحِ ، قَالَ مُعَاذٌ : فَإِذَا هُوَ سَاجِدٌ ، فَهَبَطْتُ مِنْ رَأْسِ الْجَبَلِ ، وَهُوَ سَاجِدٌ ، فَلَمْ يَرْفَعْ رَأْسَهُ حَتَّى أَسَأْتُ بِهِ الظَّنَّ ، فَظَنَنْتُ أَنْ قَدْ قُبِضَ ، فَلَمَّا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ، قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، " لَقَدْ أَسَأْتُ بِكَ الظَّنَّ ، وَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّكَ قَدْ قُبِضْتَ ، فَقَالَ : جَاءَنِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ بِهَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُقْرِئُكَ السَّلامَ ، وَيَقُولُ لَكَ : مَا تُحِبُّ أَنْ أَصْنَعَ بِأُمَّتِكَ ؟ ، قُلْتُ : اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ ، فَذَهَبَ ، ثُمَّ جَاءَنِي ، فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ يَقُولُ : لا أَسُوءُكَ فِي أُمَّتِكَ ، فَسَجَدْتُ ، فَأَفْضَلُ مَا يُتَقَرَّبُ بِهِ إِلَى اللَّهِ السُّجُودُ "، لا يُرْوَى عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ مُعَاذٍ ، إِلا بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ
Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Mu’adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) went out in search of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) but did not find him anywhere. Then he searched in the houses but did not find you (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he began wandering through the streets until he learned of your (peace and blessings be upon him) presence on Mount Thawab, so he climbed it. He looked to the right and left, then saw that cave which people had made a path towards the Mosque of Victory. Sayyiduna Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) says: You (peace and blessings be upon him) were fallen in prostration there, so I descended from the top of the mountain and you (peace and blessings be upon him) were in prostration. You (peace and blessings be upon him) did not raise your head, so doubts entered my heart; I thought that you (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away. Then when you (peace and blessings be upon him) raised your head, I said: O Messenger of Allah! I had a wrong thought about you that you had passed away. You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Jibril (peace be upon him) came to me at this place and said: Allah Almighty sends you greetings and asks you what treatment you prefer for your Ummah? I said: Allah Almighty knows best. Then he left and came again and said: We will not grieve you regarding your Ummah, so I prostrated. So the most virtuous place by which a person becomes close to Allah Almighty is prostration.”
