Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The poor Muslims came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! The wealthy have taken all the reward from us; they pray as we pray, they fast as we fast, and they perform Hajj as we do. But they have wealth, so they give charity from it, and we do not give charity because we do not have wealth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of an action, that if you do it, you will catch up with those who have gone ahead, and those who come after will not be able to catch up with you, except those who do as you do? After every prayer, say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times." When this hadith reached the wealthy, they also began to recite this remembrance, and did as the poor did. So the poor came again and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is the grace of Allah; He gives it to whom He wills."

Narrated Abu Hurairah: Abu Dharr said: Prophet of Allah. The wealthy people have all the rewards; they pray as we pray; they fast as we fast; and they have surplus wealth which they give in charity; but we have no wealth which we may give in charity. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Abu Dharr, should I not teach you phrases by which you acquire the rank of those who excel you? No one can acquire your rank except one who acts like you. He said: Why not, Messenger of Allah? He said: Exalt Allah (say: Allah is Most Great) after each prayer thirty-three times; and praise Him (say: Praise be to Allah) thirty-three times; and glorify Him (say: Glory be to Allah) thirty-three times, and end it by saying, "There is no god but Allah alone, there is no partner, to Him belongs the Kingdom, to Him praise is due and He has power over everything". His sins will be forgiven, even if they are like the foam of the sea.

1504. Commentary: Sahih Muslim – Al-Masajid Hadith: 59 ➎ And Sunan an-Nasa’i, As-Sahw, Hadith: 354, and Sunan al-Bayhaqi (Du‘a), in these the order of the dhikr is: Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar. According to the research of Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, the last phrase in this narration (“his sins will be forgiven...etc.”) is not authentic; rather, it is interpolated. However, from other narrations, this phrase is established as being marfu‘ (attributed directly to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

´It was narrated that Abu Dharr said:` “It was said to the Prophet (ﷺ) and perhaps (one of the narrators) Sufyan said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Those who have property and wealth have surpassed us in reward. They say the same as we do, and they spend but we do not spend.’ He said to me: ‘Shall I not tell you something which, if you do it, you will catch up with those who have surpassed you and you will excel over those who come after you? Praise Allah (by saying Al- Hamdu Lillah) after every prayer, and glorify Him (by saying Subhan- Allah) and extol Him (by saying Allahu Akbar), thirty-three, thirty- three, and thirty-four times.’” Sufyan said: “I do not know which of them was to be recited thirty-four times.”

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The spirit of competing in good deeds is noteworthy.
➋ The remembrance of Allah (dhikr) at times becomes a cause for greater reward than even acts of financial worship.
➌ The meaning of “catching up with those who have gone ahead” is that those people who, by performing many other good deeds, have reached higher ranks than you—through the blessing of the remembrance of Allah, you can attain even higher ranks than them. And those who perform more good deeds but are heedless of the remembrance of Allah cannot attain as many ranks as you. Therefore, along with other good deeds, attention towards the remembrance of Allah is also necessary.
➍ Here, the narrator is uncertain as to which of the three phrases is to be recited thirty-four times. From other narrations, it becomes certain that the phrase to be recited thirty-four times is “Allahu Akbar.” (: Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-Adab, Chapter on Tasbih at the time of sleep, Hadith: 5062)
