Stages of creation in the mother's womb
Hadith 19
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ الْمَنَاطِقِيُّ الرَّمْلِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الصَّائِغُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ الْغُدَانِيُّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ : حَدَّثَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَهُوَ الصَّادِقُ الْمَصْدُوقُ : " أَنَّ خَلْقَ أَحَدِكُمْ يُجْمَعُ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا ، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ عَلَقَةً مثل ذَلِكَ ، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ مُضْغَةً مثل ذَلِكَ ، ثُمَّ يَأْتِي الْمَلَكُ فَيَكْتُبُ : شَقِيُّ أَوْ سَعِيدٌ ، ذَكَرٌ أَوْ أُنْثَى "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ ، إِلا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, says: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, told us—and he was very truthful: "Your creation is gathered in your mother's womb for forty days, then it becomes a clot of blood, then for such a period it becomes a morsel of flesh, then an angel comes and writes down whether he is fortunate or unfortunate and whether he is male or female."
