Description of the Sunnah method of combining prayers during travel
Hadith 1182
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ عَامِرِ بْنِ وَاثِلَةَ ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ " كَانَ إِذَا ارْتَحَلَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَزِيغَ الشَّمْسُ أَخَّرَ الظُّهْرَ حَتَّى يُصَلِّيَهَا مَعَ الْعَصْرِ ، وَإِذَا ارْتَحَلَ بَعْدَ زَيْغِ الشَّمْسِ عَجَّلَ الْعَصْرَ حَتَّى يُصَلِّيَهُمَا جَمِيعًا ، وَإِذَا ارْتَحَلَ قَبْلَ غُرُوبِ الشَّمْسِ أَخَّرَ الْمَغْرِبَ حَتَّى يُصَلِّيَهُمَا جَمِيعًا ، وَإِذَا ارْتَحَلَ بَعْدَ غُرُوبِ الشَّمْسِ صَلاهَا مَعَ الْمَغْرِبِ "، لا يُرْوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ عَنْ مُعَاذٍ ، إِلا بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ قُتَيْبَةُ
Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would set out on a journey before the sun had declined, he would delay the Zuhr prayer and combine it with Asr; and when he would set out after the sun had declined, he would hasten the Asr prayer and combine it with Zuhr; and when he would set out on a journey before sunset, he would delay the Maghrib prayer and combine it with Isha; and when he would set out after sunset, he would combine Isha with Maghrib.
