Narrated Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Jusham al-Mudlaji: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us an address and said: The best of you is the one who defends his tribe, so long as he commits no sin. Abu Dawud said: Abu Ayyub bin Suwaid is weak.

Benefits and Issues: This narration has a weak chain of transmission. However, assisting one’s people in sin and oppression is forbidden (haram). And this is precisely the kind of partisanship (ta‘assub) that has been prohibited. Rather, there is an explicit command: (وَتَعَاوَنُواعَلَىالْبِرِّوَالتَّقْوَىٰوَلَاتَعَاوَنُواعَلَىالْإِثْمِوَالْعُدْوَانِ) ( ) “Cooperate with one another in righteousness and piety, and do not cooperate with one another in sin and transgression.” (al-Ma’idah: 2)
