Description of the revelation of the verse in response to the accusation against the Prophet by the hypocrites
Hadith 1117
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ النَّرْسِيُّ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُمَرَ حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الدُّورِيُّ الْمُقْرِئُ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَلاءِ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ "يُنْكِرُ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ يَقْرَأُ : وَمَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَغُلَّ سورة آل عمران آية 161 ، وَيَقُولُ : كَيْفَ لا يَكُونُ لَهُ أَنْ يُغَلَّ وَقَدْ كَانَ لَهُ أَنْ يُقْتَلَ ، قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى : وَيَقْتُلُونَ الأَنْبِيَاءَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ سورة آل عمران آية 112 ، وَلَكِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ اتَّهَمُوا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنَ الْغَنِيمَةِ ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ : وَمَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَغُلَّ سورة آل عمران آية 161 "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَلاءِ ، إِلا الْيَزِيدِيُّ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ أَبُو عُمَرَ الدُّورِيُّ
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to refuse to recite: "And it is not for a prophet to act dishonestly," and would say: How can it be that they are not restrained, when they were even killed? Thus Allah Almighty says: "And they kill the prophets without right," meaning "they unjustly kill the prophets." Rather, the hypocrites accused the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of stealing from the spoils, so Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And it is not for a prophet to act dishonestly," meaning "it is not befitting for any prophet to act dishonestly."
