Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The Quraysh offered the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so much wealth that he would become the richest in Makkah, and they would marry him to whichever woman he wished, and they would always follow behind him. So they said: O Muhammad! We will give you all of this if you stop speaking ill of our gods, do not insult them. If you dislike this, then we impose upon you a necessary matter in which there is good for you as well. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is that?" They said: For one year you worship our idols, Lat and Uzza, and for one year we worship your God. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will see what my Lord commands me." Then revelation came from Allah from the Preserved Tablet: (Say: O disbelievers...) to the end of the surah. Also, this verse was revealed: ... (Say: Is it other than Allah you order me to worship, O ignorant ones?... Rather, worship Allah and be among the grateful) (Az-Zumar: 64, 66), meaning: "Say: O ignorant ones! Do you tell me to worship other than Allah? Rather, worship Allah and be grateful to Him."
