Hadith 1108

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The rewards and good deeds of my Ummah were presented before me, even to the extent of a straw that a person removes from the mosque. And the sins of my Ummah were also presented before me, and I did not see any sin greater than that of a person who was given a verse or a surah and then he forgot it."

Commentary:
Note:
(In the chain of narration, both Matlub and Ibn Jurayj are mudallis narrators and have narrated with 'an'anah. Furthermore, there is also a discontinuity (inqita') in the chain between Matlub and Anas. See Da'if Abi Dawud: 1/164)

461. Commentary:
➊ Imam Tirmidhi rahimahullah has termed this narration as "gharib" (rare), but Imam Ibn Khuzaymah rahimahullah has declared it "sahih" (authentic). Allamah Khattabi rahimahullah reports that Imam Bukhari rahimahullah and others say that Mutalib bin Abdullah did not hear from any Companion. Furthermore, there is also criticism regarding Abdul Majeed bin Abdul Aziz. In any case, the virtue of cleaning and maintaining the mosque is established from other authentic narrations. For example, a female Companion had made it her routine to clean the mosque, so the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam went to her grave and offered her funeral prayer there.
➋ Similarly, memorizing the Noble Qur'an and then forgetting it can also fall under the category of abandonment (mahjoori), and thus this too can be blameworthy.

208 Lexical Explanation:
«عُرِضَتْ » is a third person, passive verb. It means: were made apparent, were brought forth.
This is the deputy subject (na'ib fa'il) of «عُرِضَتْ ». The record of deeds of my ummah (community).
The "ya" here is emphasized (mushaddad). The "ya" of «جرعلى» has been assimilated into the first person "ya" (ya' al-mutakallim).
The "qaf" has a fatha, and the "dhal" is light (mukhaffaf). It refers to a straw or similar thing, which falls into a drink, or gets into the eye, or is commonly found inside houses.
It has been called "gharib" (uncommon/isolated).

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this hadith, it is understood that even the smallest of deeds are not devoid of reward and recompense.
➋ Islam has greatly emphasized the cleanliness and purity of mosques. Even a straw should not be left in the mosque. Whoever performs such a minor act (removing a straw and throwing it outside), he will certainly receive a reward for it.
➌ Imam Tirmidhi rahimahullah has called this hadith "gharib" because in its chain of narration is Matlib bin Abdullah, who narrates from Anas radi Allahu anhu, whereas Matlib did not hear from Anas radi Allahu anhu, nor from any other companion. Nevertheless, the virtue of cleaning and purifying the mosque is established from other authentic narrations, such as the incident where a female companion had made cleaning the mosque her regular practice, so the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam went to her grave and performed her funeral prayer there.
